Dandelion – should be up around the Alligator River Bridge area.  Went below to
get my laptop to watch a movie and realized I had left the power supply for it
at school.  Bad move since all the music for the wedding is on the laptop!
Tried calling Mary a number of times, but the signal kept dropping.  Hope I got
enough of the message through to her.

Comments: Leaving Elizabeth City heading to Columbia on the Scuppernong River.
We had a wonderful time here.  Upon arrival, we were immediately invited to a
cover dish supper that was wonderful by others who have their boats at Pelican
Marina.  To top it off, they did it again Monday night and again invited us.  We
were a little late leaving this morning since I had to go to a clinic and have
the stitches removed from my upper lip where Princeton bit me last week.  I was
in his face when I woke him up, scaring him.  I didn’t think my face was that
scary!

Comments: We have docked in downtown Columbia at the free public pier.  This is
a small sleepy town with a single restaurant.  The docks and cleats are a little
worn.  Normally they have water available, but the line broke last week.  They
hope to get it fixed soon.  They do have a wonderful nature walk through the
area around the edge of the river.

Weather: Raining, wind at 20 kts from the east
Comments: It rained all night and the wind has picked up.  We are bow in and the
wind is coming from our stern.  There are boats on either side of use sticking
out beyond the pylons – there anchors look like hungry mouths waiting to get
hold of our rigging.  To add to that there is a rock jetty about 100’ off our
stern as well.  I am nervous about getting us out of here unscathed, but neither
Mary or I want to spend a day here! I have a plan worked out with the dock
master to help us get away.  I am going to release all lines but the starboard
stern and bow and the port spring (going aft).  I will pull the stern of
Annabelle to the stern pylon and release that line.  Ducking into the cockpit I
will hit reverse.  The wind will try to move the stern port, but Annabelle walks
to starboard in reverse.  Mary will release the spring line as we start back,
and the dock master will release the bow line and throw it to Mary.  I keep
remembering that old saying about no battle plan ever survives the first meeting
with the enemy!

Comments: The plan to leave River Forest Marina worked almost flawlessly.  The
dock master was slow releasing his line and ended up not being able to throw it
to Mary.  She was able to pull it all out of the water before I had to start
forward (50’ lines on a 41’ sailboat means lines wrapped around the prop).  We
were able to get out without hitting a thing – much to the relief of those boat
owners around us who were watching rather anxiously.  The Pungo River is rough
as we head down toward the Pamlico River.

Comments: What a hoot it has been in Washington.  We became celebrities with out
Just Married banner.  The local newspaper received a number of calls, to which
they came out and took a picture of the boat and banner.  We were not at the
boat at the time.  The dock master gave us the reporter’s name and we meet him
at “A Slice of Heaven” – a coffee and desert shop that was unbelievable.  He
took some pictures of us as well as interviewed us.  We ended up on the front
page of today’s paper.  Washington is a great place to visit by boat.  Lots of
shops in walking distance (several featured in Southern Living), the water front
is clean and many locals use it as a walking area.

Comments: We have passed Gum Thicket Shoal.  With a navigable width of over 4
miles, we were just passed by a 40’ power boat that cut less that 100’ in front
of us.  Just makes you wonder about some stink pot drivers.  I have always
contended that in order to drive a stink pot you had to have just enough
intelligence to turn the key and floor the throttles.  I have met quite a few
polite stink pot drivers this week who went out of their way to keep from
rocking us, so I know they are not all so stupid and rude.

Comments: We are headed to Blackbeard Sailing Club for an overnight stay.  We
are looking for somewhere to keep Annabelle as the prices in Oriental continue
to climb to higher and higher rates.  Most places will be at the $92/foot/year
this year – that works out to be $314 month for Annabelle.  We found a place in
Elizabeth City that the rate is $3/foot/month with an additional charge of about
$15/month for power.  This means we can have a slip with cable, water, and power
for $138/month.  We emptied the heads before heading to New Berne.

Comments: Had just finished lunch a few minutes before noon
when the engine over temp alarm sounded.  I killed the engine and dropped
anchor in the mouth of the Pungo River.  The belt for the
alternator/internal water pump had shredded.  Fortunately I had one in
place to put on.  Otherwise rather than just removing the raw water pump
belt, I would have also had to remove one of the hoses that runs from the engine
to the hot water heater tank.  Total job from alarm to getting under way
again was under 30 minutes.  It was hot in the engine room!  I need to
purchase a couple more belts and put them in place.  The belt that broke is
a Goodyear Gatorback 11AV1220.  Some one had suggested looking for a Kevlar
belt as they are stronger and the 110A alternator tends to eat belts.  The
current belt is a tad too long - the alternator is already to the extreme of its
adjustment.

Comments: I got so hot I finally setup the 20" box fan to
blow on me - it helps alot.  I had hoped to make Alligator River Marina
before stopping for the day, but it is still ~40 miles or 7 hrs away.

Comments: I have just exited the Alligator-Pungo Canal.
Still raining with heavy lighting ahead.  There is a trawler anchored in
Georgia Bay - the chart shows a channel with 8 foot depths, so I decided to stop
there for the night.  There is still 20 miles to the Alligator River
Marina, which would put me there after dark.  I think anchoring here would
be better than farther ahead when I would be in the open Alligator River where
chop could build.  Took pictures of Odyssey - the trawler anchored in the
bay with the sun behind them - contacted them via VHF and got an email address
to send to pictures too.  About 8 PM another sailboat joined us in the bay.
