Comments: Mary and I took a day sail toward the mouth of the
Pasquotank River and back.  Averaged 5-6 kts.  Boat was well balanced
with all three sails up.  Without the autopilot running and hands off the
helm, the bow would shift ~7º
into the wind as it freshened and then drop back the same number of degrees when
the wind lightened.  Good sailing.

disaster of leaving the slip.  Windlass would not pull the anchor back up – must
have sheared a pin.  We did manage to dock with minimal problem.

Comments:  With the slow passing of Ophelia, I have returned to port.  Nothing
worse than sustained 20-25 kt winds.  Gusts probably higher while I was sleeping
Wednesday night.  The two anchor placement worked fine – although without the
windlass, getting them both up took me almost 2 hours!  The 12v generator worked
like a charm keeping the batteries charged without running the main engine.  Of
course there was some help from the wind generator!

Comments:  We have arrived at the state dock at Bath, NC.  We got here about
9:30PM.  The trip in was a little tricky – the radar has gone down.  Seems when
it has run a bit, it looses signal.  Mary used the big spot to find the day nav
aids.  Just as we came into the creek, a ~20 foot sail boat went by us with no
lights.  We did not miss them by much, but only because they could see us!
There were a number of sailboats anchored on either side of the channel from the
hurricane.  We had a devil of a time finding the state dock – we know where it
should be (just before Bath Marina) – finally Mary found it with the spot.  It
was empty of boats, but had about 80 geese on it.  As we came in, they scattered
and were not happy with us at all!.  As I rounded up on the dock, Mary got a bow
line on a pylon like a true sailor.  I was able to jump off and secure a stern
line.  We covered 125 miles today in just under 15 ½ hours – something we do not
ever plan on doing again in inland waters!  Princeton was glad to get to shore.
The geese have continued to squawk at us for the past 30 minutes.  On to a hot
shower!
